More exciting news from the USA has reached me through the internets: while the Occupiers have mostly decamped, they haven’t missed a beat. They’re still meeting daily in the lobby of the Deutsche Bank, they’ve gone ahead and rented office space, and they’ve started a movement to physically block foreclosures through civil disobedience.

The movement out of encampments takes away one of our critics’ main arguments, that the movement was a magnet for criminal activity. Another criticism is that we’re hippies and we don’t bathe enough. We must pay attention to our critics and support them in whatever way we can. At the end of the day, we have to share the earth with them. So all hippies should be bathed once a month, whether they need it or not.
A third criticism coming from our ideological opponents is that they say we’re lazy. This is not only a diss but a challenge; not only a challenge, but a request that we redouble our efforts to get everyone out of the present crisis. So let’s work harder on this than anyone has ever worked before. Keep studying the situation. Whatever your skill is, put it toward the movement. Those of us at the periphery need to support the ones at the center and liaise with outsiders. We’ve all been lying low, training ourselves, getting ready for this for a long time. Let’s take our ethics and our energy and change things for the better.

  1. http://vimeo.com/33141522 On December 3rd, community activists and occupiers canvassed East New York, Brooklyn in preparation for December 6th National Day of Action.

Just from the few hours, conversing and handing out flyers, over 300 community members are already interested in being involved.

“This action is part of a national kick-off for a new frontier for the occupy movement: the liberation of vacant bank-owned homes for those in need, and the defense of families under threat of foreclosure and eviction. Actions will take place in more than 25 cities across the country…”

    This is only the beginning.
